On the afternoon of Thursday, February 9th, 2023, the Newark Police Department responded to the Newark Library as a result of a violent altercation that occurred on the library property. The scene was quickly contained and the perpetrators were apprehended.
Safety is one of the top priorities of our library. As such, all threats or acts of violence are taken seriously.
As a result of Thursday’s incident, the Newark Library has taken steps toward improving the safety of our patrons. These steps include significant changes to the layout of our teen room, a reduction in the maximum number of teens allowed in the teen room at one time, the requirement of parental consent to utilize the teen room, the requirement of photo ID on file, the addition of a designated location for all bags to be stored upon entering the teen room, and a strict no-loitering policy in the teen room.
Library Staff, in conjunction with The Library Board of Trustees, will continue to work closely with the Newark Police Department to maintain the library as a safe space for all.
Questions or concerns about the changes can be directed to the Assistant Director or Library Director.
Thank you for your support.
